The ISO 55000 series is a management-system family for asset management, maintained by ISO/TC 251. It is not a software specification and it is not “the EAM standard.” ISO 55001 can be used as the requirements document for accredited certification of an organisation’s asset management system. Buying or configuring EAM/CMMS software does not confer ISO 55001. PAS 55 is legacy (withdrawn 30 Jan 2015).372223

TC 251 home additionally states that 55000 / 55001 / 55010 / 55011 / 55012 / 55013 2024 editions were launched 3 July 2024 (55011 catalogue publication date is 2024-08). Upcoming named there: ISO 55014 on decision-making, PAS 55035 on sustainability in asset management, and the next ISO 55002 revision. GFMAM’s publications index says ISO 55000 was “first published in January 2014, with its latest version released in June 2024” — GFMAM’s month is approximate; use ISO.org 2024-07 for 55000/55001.729
4.2 What each published part covers (abstracts / TC 251, not clause dumps)
- ISO 55000:2024 — vocabulary, overview, principles. Context for 55001 and 55002. Applies to all types of assets and all organisations (TC 251). Not a requirements specification; you cannot “certify to 55000.”27
- ISO 55001:2024 — requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an asset management system. Certification target where used. TC 251: the 2024 edition has a stronger focus on outcomes of asset-management activities, and (committee summary) clearer requirements on decision-making, realising value, AM planning, risk and opportunities, data and knowledge, life-cycle operations. Catalogue FAQ: 55000 = overview/terminology; 55001 = AMS requirements; 55002 = application guidance.37
- ISO 55002:2018 — guidelines for applying an AMS in accordance with ISO 55001. Catalogue / CD 55002.2 abstract repeats three NOTES: (1) intended to be used for managing physical assets in particular, but can also be applied to other asset types; (2) no financial, accounting or technical guidance for managing specific asset types — Annex F on financial vs non-financial functions; (3) for 55000/55001/55002, “asset management system” means a management system for asset management. Written against 55001:2014. Implementers use 55001:2024 for requirements and 55002:2018 as guidance that may not line up clause-for-clause. There is no published ISO 55002:2024.2425
- ISO/TS 55010:2024 — align financial and non-financial AM functions; internal controls; not certifiable.1314
- ISO 55011:2024 — “guidance to advance the adoption of asset management through public policy, specifically focused on the external context of all organizations that manage assets.” Defines an enabling environment and how public-policy instruments can create, sustain and improve it (UN SDGs / public investment are named). Audience: policymakers, not plant maintainers and not EAM vendors.26
- ISO 55012:2024 — guidance on enhancing involvement and commitment of personnel within an AMS, including human and cultural factors around the SAMP and AM plans, competence, and team interdependencies. “Applicable to any organization, regardless of its type or size”; principles “can be more broadly applied” even if asset management is not conducted as a formal AMS.8
- ISO 55013:2024 — managing data to support AM objectives. Not a data-valuation standard (see §3.5).15
TC 251 brochure Rev3 (committee guidance, not the standard) names 2024 principles as value, alignment, leadership, outcome-focused, with new outcomes assurance, adaptability, sustainability. Do not assert 2024 clause numbers from that brochure or from blogs. IAM Anatomy v3 quoted ISO 55000:2014 clause 2.4.2 fundamentals as Value, Alignment, Leadership, Assurance — 2014 wording, historical only.309
4.3 Certification is of the organisation’s AMS, not of software
ISO 55001 specifies requirements for an AMS. Where organisations seek accredited certification, what is assessed is that management system (policies, objectives, processes, people, plans, data — GFMAM 2.2), not Maximo, SAP, IFS, or any other product.31
GFMAM’s Guidance for an Asset Management System Scheme for Accredited Certification to ISO 55001 (publications index date 2026-06) is written for accreditation bodies and “reflects the amendments to meet the requirements of ISO 55001:2024.”29
IAM Anatomy v3 §5.3 (historical): organisations may have their AMS assessed for conformance to ISO 55001 by independent third parties; a certificate “demonstrates a level of competence and good practice in asset management.”9
ISO itself does not certify organisations. ISO.org: “ISO does not perform certification or issue certificates, and it does not permit anyone to use the ISO logo in connection with certification.” Certification is performed by external certification bodies. Do not imply that ISO issues the certificate, and do not imply that a software SKU is in scope.735
Buying EAM ≠ ISO 55001. Configuring a work-order system is neither necessary nor sufficient for that certificate. GFMAM 2.2 includes “Asset Management data and the information systems” as elements of the AMS, not as the AMS.1
4.4 PAS 55 as predecessor (withdrawn)
BSI PAS 55 was the UK publicly available specification for physical-asset management that the ISO 55000 series grew out of.
BSI Knowledge product page for PAS 55-1:2008 (Specification for the optimized management of physical assets): published 15 Sep 2008; withdrawn 30 Jan 2015. BSI: “we’ve transformed it to become an international standard” in three parts (55000 / 55001 / 55002). Scope: physical assets and asset systems over their life cycles; other asset types only insofar as they affect physical assets. Split: Part 1 specification, Part 2 guidelines. Developed with IAM and a large international consultation. Historical correspondence annex to OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.23
PAS 55-2:2008 (guidelines) has the same withdrawal date, 30 Jan 2015.31
First-publication year. The same BSI PAS 55-1:2008 product page says PAS 55-1 was “first published in 2003” in one block and “Since its publication in 2004” in another; it also says PAS 55-1:2008 and 55-2:2008 supersede PAS 55-1:2003 and 55-2:2003. Intertek Inform lists a PAS 55-1:2003 record (published 09-01-2003 on that shop page). BSI’s own 2008 PDF copyright block, as quoted in secondary sources, says “First published as Part 1 and Part 2, April 2004.” Do not pick one year. Wiki wording: first published 2003/2004 (BSI product page uses both); revised 2008; withdrawn 30 Jan 2015.2332
Some secondary articles say withdrawn in 2014 (ISO 55000 publication year). Primary BSI date is 30 Jan 2015. Prefer BSI. Do not treat PAS 55 as a current certification scheme. The BSI paraphrase of PAS 55-1’s description of asset management on that product page is historical, not the current ISO 55000 definition.23
IAM’s SAM tooling history (IAM SAM2025 global webinar PDF, 14 Jan 2026): PAS 55-Assessment Methodology (2008) → SAM+ (2015, ISO 55001:2014 / Anatomy V2) → SAM2025 aligned to ISO 55001:2024, GFMAM Landscape v3, IAM Anatomy V4. That is IAM’s own product history, useful only to show PAS 55 is not current.33
4.5 Landscape subjects are not 55001 clauses
GFMAM Landscape v3 is a freely citable subject map of the discipline (seven groups, including Delivery 6.1–6.8). ISO 55001 is narrower: requirements for a management system. Do not collapse Landscape subject numbers with 55001 clause numbers. GFMAM says so in the purpose statement; Assetivity’s explainer of v3 is a labelled secondary on the same split.111
IAM Anatomy v4 (Jul 2024) maps Landscape subjects onto IAM’s 10-box capabilities model (IAM news; v4 body not quoted). Anatomy is a professional-body introduction, not ISO.10
4.6 Committee drafts that are not in force
ISO/CD 55002.2 will replace ISO 55002:2018 as ed. 3 of the application guide. On the ISO catalogue it reached stage 30.99 (CD approved for registration as DIS) on 23 Sep 2026, after a second committee-draft consultation that closed on 6 Jun 2026. The next step, DIS registration (40.00), has not happened. TC 251’s communiqué from the 15th meeting targets publication for summer 2027 (planned, not published).252436 Until publication, ISO 55002:2018 remains the current guide.
ISO/CD TS 55014 (Guidance for asset management decision making) is a committee draft. CD consultation opened 28 Apr 2026 and closed 24 Jun 2026 (catalogue stage 30.60). It is not a standard in force.27
ISO/CD PAS 55035 (Guidance for the integration of sustainability within an asset management system), catalogue number 90654, stage 30.60 (close of comment 15 Nov 2025). Earlier TC 251 pages and a TC 251 LinkedIn post (17 Apr 2026) labelled the same project “PAS 25535”. TC 251’s home and project pages now use PAS 55035, and only a FAQ heading on the ISO catalogue page still says 25535. Treat 25535 as a superseded mislabel: ISO/NP 25535 is an unrelated TC 234 aquaculture project. A LinkedIn post from the ISO/TC 251 account (17 Apr 2026) said the document “will be published towards the end of 2026”; that is a committee social-media forecast, not a catalogue publication date. Not in force.28734
Do not write as if 55014 or 55035 are standards organisations can be certified against.
